What to Focus on in School on Friday and Next Week's Reading

Chapter 1 talked about the principles and standards of the NCTM.

1) We didn't spend much time discussing these yet, but I am curious whether you notice any aspects of the six principles during math learning. You may want to review them again before you head to the school.

2) Please make note of what processes are taking place. If you are not sure what the 5 processes are take a quick look at the chapter or take a pic on your smartphone.

Chapter 2 is about doing mathematics. There is a section that lists the active verbs of what we want learners to be doing.

3) On Friday, I want you to make a few observations as to what verbs are in action during 'math time'... are the children "explaining" or are they spending more time "listening"...  pay particular attention to the actions of the children.

Please bring all your field notes (the observations you are making during the day or shortly after) on the topics above to class.

Next week we will be moving onto Chapter 3 in our text, so please aim to have that chapter completed by next Thursday's class.

I cannot track down a second copy of the text to place on reserve in the CMC so if you still do not have a copy,  be resourceful and find someone else in the class who will share theirs with you.

Have fun with the children on Friday and I will see you Tuesday February 4th.

:-)
